Paying For Your Replacement Basement Windows

When you are considering any type of home repair or remodeling, one thing that you must figure out is the cost of doing such work.  Obviously the price will vary based on the company you choose to purchase your replacement basement windows from, but there’s a few things to consider that will give you a general idea of what to expect.

What type of basement windows do you really need?  The vinyl windows are cheap to afford and don’t last long.  On the other hand the wooden windows are expensive but can last for decades.  Determine how long you are planning on being in your home to help you decide what is best.

You should make an appointment for a free in-home estimate.  Nearly all companies offer these and that should give you the best idea of how much this is likely to cost you.  Just be sure that there are no costs or obligations for the estimate.  Also be sure the salesperson is clear that they are only there to provide the estimate on the cost of the replacement basement windows and not the labor.  More than likely the salesman will probably quote you something middle of the road, try and haggle a little.  Say things like; you’d really like to use their business but you have a strict budget that you will be following.  This should help lower the price for you.

Once you have the price, stick to it.  The salesman will likely try to tempt you with discounts to get you to make an on the spot decision.  Its best to compare several quotes so ask for a few days extension on the quoted price to think it over.  Don’t let them make you feel bad that you’re putting them off, they have to prove why you should buy your replacement basement windows from them.

Also ask about warranties.  Many companies specialize in basement windows and should be able to offer a nice warranty on your purchase.  Also, should you move, you might want to find out if that warranty is transferable to a new owner.  Ask how long the order will take to come in, many companies will tell you it will take 6-8 weeks.  This is usually an attempt to get you to buy quicker and “get the process started”.  Usually however, it should take no longer than 3 weeks unless there’s a pretty serious backlog.  Ask specifically if it will be longer then three weeks and don’t let them exaggerate the time to get the sale.

Finally, be clear on price.  Most companies seek a two-payment system.  One payment at the time of purchase, and one upon delivery of the replacement basement windows.  Be sure you know exactly what you’re committing to.  Now all you have to do is find the perfect company to get your basement windows.
